The VINCI approach to eco-cities and eco-communities

Innovation is an opportunity to harness the energies of teams from different business lines around a common project. VINCI's vision of the city of tomorrow is one such project. Work on eco-communities gained momentum in 2008, moving into a more operational phase. It combines VINCI's expertise in property, design/construction, telecommunication and energy networks and sustainable mobility.

Urban policy is another priority, with The City Factory, a think tank launched by VINCI in 2007, bringing together experts and public and private decision-makers involved in urban policy. Numerous exchanges took place around the "sustainable city", with two major events in 2008 inspired by an open-minded and multidisciplinary approach: one around urban mobility and the need for change, held in London in April and the other around the type of infrastructure required to restore the competitiveness of the Paris Region, held in Paris in October. A specific urban model – baptised Pirandello – has been developed to help decision-makers understand the mechanisms of urban development.

VINCI's reflection around eco-communities and eco-cities is given a major scientific boost through its association with three ParisTech engineering schools focusing on eco-design of cities and environments (Mines ParisTech, AgroParisTech and L’Ecole des Ponts ParisTech). The eco-design chair for built ensembles and infrastructure, a partnership signed by VINCI in November 2008, aims to develop neutral and objective measuring instruments for the development of eco-cities and make them available to all the people involved in the value chain.
