Refurbishment of South Terminal at Gatwick Airport

On 12 October, VINCI Construction UK signed a contract with Gatwick Airport to refurbish South Terminal’s Pier 2. The project, for which VINCI Construction UK’s Air division has just started preparatory works, will increase the number of boarding gates from 9 to 13. In the longer term, this refurbishment will be followed by the demolition and redevelopment of Pier 1. Contract value: £31m (€34.5m).

Next step in the BSF programme

Within the framework of the BSF (Building Schools for the Future) programme, which aims to rebuild or refurbish all schools in Sheffield by 2015,VINCI Construction UK (VINCI Construction) has secured a further contract, for the renovation of High Storrs Secondary School. Given this establishment’s Grade II listed status (buildings of particular architectural interest), its protected areas will be refurbished and the rest rebuilt. The works began this summer, and are due for completion in September 2011. Contract value: €25m.

Two contracts for VINCI Construction UK

In Barnsley, in the south of Yorkshire, VINCI Construction UK has been awarded the contract to refurbish a Tesco store. To be completed in 19 weeks, the contract falls within the framework of a partnership begun some twenty years ago between Taylor Woodrow (VINCI Construction UK) and the retail chain concerning the construction and/or refurbishment of the latter’s sales outlets. This project calls for an extension and the construction of a 2,000 sq. metre mezzanine level with the aim of transforming a Superstore into an Extra Store. Contract value: £7.3m (€8.6m).
VINCI Construction UK has won a £10m (€12m) order for a palliative care unit at St Barnabas House in Worthing, West Sussex. Requiring a year of works, this project involves the construction of a twostorey building including five single-storey units where patients will be accommodated.

Extending a hospital

In Aintree (Merseyside), Norwest Holst (VINCI Construction UK) is proceeding with the construction of a four-storey medical centre, external works and landscaping at the local teaching hospital. The company recently installed the two parts (each 70 metres in length and weighing 60 tonnes) of the footbridge linking the existing operating theatres with the new unit. Contract value: £23m (€29m).

Sports infrastructure in Kent

Medway Council (Kent) has awarded Crispin & Borst (VINCI Construction UK) a £4.4m (some €5m) contract to build an extension at Medway Park, the new regional centre for sporting excellence in Gillingham. Extending over three levels, these facilities will be used as a training centre for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and then made available to Medway residents.

A state-of-the-art hospital

Stradform (VINCI Construction UK) has been awarded a £7.6m (€8.5m) contract by Vale Healthcare to build Vale Hospital, a 25-bed facility in Hensol, in South Wales. This new hospital will be equipped with the latest technology and offer a full range of services, notably in orthopaedics, general and cosmetic surgery. This is one of the largest construction projects currently being undertaken in South Wales.

Two projects well on track

In London, having completed their renovation of Tower Gateway station, reopened in March after 7 months of works, the teams from Taylor Woodrow (VINCI Construction UK) are pushing ahead with the project to extend the Docklands Light Railway, the driverless, elevated light railway network serving the city’s eastern suburbs. The project involves upgrading the infrastructure, currently used by trains with two carriages, to enable it to carry longer, three-carriage trains during the Olympic Games. Worth £208m (€230m), this design-build contract covers extending the platforms at 18 stations (including those at East India station, photo), the construction of two new viaducts and the renovation of South Quay station, where the works are due to be completed in August.
Also in London, but at King’s Cross Station, Taylor Woodrow is building a new concourse and undertaking renovation work on a number of Grade I listed buildings (buildings of outstanding architectural interest) alongside Platform 8. These works supplement the contract currently under way valued at £28m (€31m), which concerns the design, construction, testing and bringing into service of a new technical area and a shunting zone.

Car park management contracts renewed

The British Airport Authority (BAA) has renewed its contracts with VINCI Park (VINCI Concessions) for the management of the airport staff car parks at Heathrow (10,830 spaces) and Gatwick (7,405 spaces), for periods of eight months and three years respectively. The contracts cover maintenance and surveillance of the car parks.

Parking management contract renewed

In Milton Keynes, VINCI Park (VINCI Concessions) has renewed its contract with government agency English Partnership for the management of the town’s public parking areas (2,205 spaces) and of the Parking Shop (an outlet selling parking permits for Milton Keynes). The contract, which entered into force in January, also calls for the maintenance of the ticket machines and collecting the money, as well as updating the management software and bringing in an online payment facility.

Final stretch of the M74

In Scotland, on the M74 motorway, Bachy Soletanche Ltd, a subsidiary of Solétanche Bachy (VINCI Construction), is contributing to the construction of the link-up with the M8. Launched in September, the works involve creating the foundations for 14 bridges as well as for the road sign gantries along the section, i.e. 940 large-diameter bored piles and 160 standard piles, respectively. In addition, 5,909 driven piles will be installed to secure the structure’s 15 embankments.

Extending a hospital and a school

For the third time, Norwest Holst, a subsidiary of VINCI PLC (VINCI Construction) has been awarded a contract by the Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. This latest contract, worth £16m (some €18m), calls for the construction, as part of a joint venture, of a three-storey radiotherapy building within the grounds of the Royal Oldham Hospital in Manchester. The company has also been awarded, by the town council of Milton Keynes (to the northwest of London), a contract for the refurbishment of a school building, its three-storey extension, the construction of a separate, two-storey building and the creation of a car park, a playground and an access road. This contract is valued at £9m (€10m); the works will take 61 weeks to complete.

City-centre regeneration

In connection with the Westgate Development Area, a programme aiming to create a new business district in a disused area of Westgate railway station, in the centre of Wakefield (England), Norwest Holst, a subsidiary of VINCI PLC (VINCI Construction), has been awarded a £17.6m contract (some €21m) for the design and construction of a new five-storey car park. The contract includes the construction and demolition of a temporary car park as well as the redevelopment of the road network associated with the project.

Building a school

Norwest Holst, a subsidiary of VINCI PLC (VINCI Construction), has just secured a contract worth £29m (some €34m) for the design and construction of a secondary school in East Barnet (London). The new building (11,700 sq. metres) will accommodate 1,350 pupils. It will be erected within the grounds of the present school, which will continue to operate during the works.
